Two Film Posters (: Mr Bush

The genre of “Letters to Juliet” is romance and comedy. By the poster it portrays a picture of two loved ones on an envelope, which is held by the protagonist, Amanda Seyfried, in the movie called Sophie.  She is looking directly into the camera, which the angle is a medium close up; the envelope is covering her clothing and some of her face. This could connote that the envelope is the main object in the movie and inside that envelope it has all the secrets and information about the movie.

The envelope holds all the secrets and to find out you have to open the envelope. The picture also looks as if she is going to close the envelope to show that no one else knows but her or she could be opening it and is drawing the audience’s attention by looking directly at the audience. On the envelope, the tagline, it says “What if you has a second chance to find true love?” which could connote what the story line is about. it could mean that she is experiencing a loss of her true love and the people on the envelope is her model to show you can get together at the end or it could be a juxtaposition.

The colours of the poster are earth colours such as beige and green. These colours can connote that movie is very peaceful, violence is not included, and the scenery that she and the picture on the envelope are surrounded by is trees to also connote peace. The colour green connotes nature. It symbolises growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility, for example the birth of a new beginning. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Light brown/beige implies realism, in context with the poster it shows that what might occur can happen and it is not a fantasy but can also be sad and wistful to show nothing last in a happy ending.

The target audience is mainly girls aged 16-24, who fantasies about meeting someone and falling in love, also being adventurous. This is shown by the name “Letters to Juliet” is shows that it will be a love movie and it seems that it will be a modern version of Romeo and Juliet but it is not and the character is not called Juliet. The movie is not a typical storyline.

The genre of “Frozen” is Action, Adventure and Thriller. The poster shows a girl/boy left on the chairlift whilst the other character is trying to get down from the chairlift. You could say that one of the protagonists has fallen but the chairlift is not titled or looks broken therefore you are left with the idea of guy trying to jump down. Further from the picture you can see another chairlift, which could connote  that they were the only ones left on the chairlift and it had got stuck or they would have been left on the chairlift without anyone knowing because if there was people stuck on a chairlift they would try to help not just leave them. You can see it is snowing which reflects back to the name “Frozen”. This connoted that they have been left p there and if they did not try to get down they would freeze to death. You can see the mountains in the background with no lights on connoting it has been abandoned for the night.

The colours used are black, grey and white. These colours connote, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors, Black is the colour of the night, and of "evil" and shows intensity. They have direct white light from the moon hitting the protagonists and the chairlift to allow the picture to stand out from the rest. The Title of the movie is white on black which is the same colour as the moon and the light hitting the protagonists, connoting that they all have something in common during the movie.

The targeted audience for “Frozen” is male aged 16-24 because the context has some gruesome scenes and also it is an action and thriller movie. The tagline is “no one knows you’re up there’ to show that they combat unexpected obstacles, they start to question if their will to survive is strong enough to overcome the worst ways to die. The type of shot is a low angle shot, where the audience is looking up at the picture, to show how high up the ground the protagonists are.

Out of the two movies the most effective poster is “Frozen” because it gives out many enigma codes and action codes, it also makes the audience question the poster which would increase the chances of them watching the movie. In addition the most successful poster was “Letters to Juliet” because it showed enough codes but did not give the story away. However, the drawbacks are: people stereotype the type of movie it will be but it is not what is expected.
