Overall, in '27 Dresses', they follow Todrorov which is: the equilibrium, disequilibrium and the new equilibrium and also, the follow Propp by including, the dispatcher, the hero and the princess. The narrative patterns used is a linear pattern which is when the the story told is in order, because a movie like '27 dresses', they cannot show the ending before the start because then it will give the whole story away to the audience. This could connote discouragement to watch the movie because they know they whole story from the beginning. This movie targets its audience well, as they include aspects that give out enigma codes and allows the audience to relate to the feelings shown.

Submission and quality of homework: 2
Sometimes the quality of homework can slack due to leaving it last minute however besides that I have submitted my homework on time.
Ability of work independently: 1
An example of me working independently is when i was on a trip and there was homework set and work that i had missed, i caught up with it in my own time and done the essay set with no hassle, by assessing the blog. This shows my ability of working independently is good. However, if i did not understand something i would ask my peers, occasionally.
Quality of writing: 3
Sometimes my quality of writing slacks because of doing it last minute and rushing work.
Organisation of Blog: 1
All my work presented on my blog is in order of set dates, the titles of each piece is underlines to emphasise the work. I like to make my blog colourful, so when i come back to revise and take notes of the key concepts, it will appeal to me and not be dull.
Oral contributions in class: 1
I always participate in class, because then I allow myself to realise that i have learnt something and i am understanding the topic of that class.Three achievements (www):
- I have learnt new key concepts.

New Moon
What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
Throughout the New Moon trailer, they use different angles, however the main two angles are: high and low angles. The high angle is usually used on Bella, the protagonist, which connotes vulnerable, powerless and lack of knowledge. Some crane shots are used to show the scenery to understand the setting and the dangers of what should happen in that particular scene. The angles persuade the audience to understand the hierarchy and identify with the character, especially with the protagonist Bella. When the angles are shown with human to human the angles are mid-angle shot to show equality and how they understand each other and how we can relate to her as well.
They use a variety of editing mainly fade to black, by using fade to black it creates mystery and mischief, as well as looking as if it was a blink of an eye to show the natural movements throughout the trailer. The soft movement allows the audience to understand and absorb the information provided before it moves on the next scene that creates more suspense. The colour black connotes darkness and questions the storyline.
The sounds used were both diegtic, which is the voice over and the tension but also gives hints about the story and non-diegtic, which is when they talk helping the audience to understand the character by the way they talk and how they represent themselves.,
The mise-en-scene are in the school, sea, forest and the voltory, the school and the sea created the most dramatic scenes however the voltory was an unusual place because it created an exciting atmosphere for the audience and also creates suspense because it was not a common area in the trailer. In the bedroom, the camera angles connotes the character wants to escape the isolation and search for him in her dreams but it traps her even more.
At the end, there is close-up of Edward and it cuts the sound off, this show what the story revolves around. They are low-key looking up to the vampires (Edward) and the ware wolf (Jacob), the voltory look down at Edward but everyone else look up to them.
How is gender represented in this trailer?
During the trailer, the subordinate group women needed the dominate group (Bella needs Edward or Jacob). Women are weak without the males, vulnerable; this is shown by Bella saying “I belong with you”, she is screaming in her dreams because she knows that she is missing a part of her, Edwards, and it is like someone is ripping her heart in two. She is unintelligent as she questions Edward “vampires have laws?”
Some of the women have a higher power and status, for example Edwards’s sister and the voltory- Jane, she has much more power especially the voltory. As the movie goes on Bella gains power but still seems as a weak character.
Men have a high status and physically and mentally, however they become weak of love as Edward wants to kill himself to be with his “dead” girlfriend (Bella).
What target audience would be attracted to this film?
The violence and the romance attract the male and female, however the primary audience is girls aged 14-24, socio-economic class DE because of the typical love triangle. The book adaptation attracts more girls than girls because of the intimate description of the story. The good looking males attract more girls than boys as well, the girls can also identify with Bella because many girls ages 14-24, tend to think about falling in love.
The clothing is common and make up is simple to make the story more realistic and finally the theme and narratives are young characters because there still in college to allow a range of ages to identify with them.
What Hollywood values can you identify in this trailer?
Hollywood values consist of: well-known actors, Robert Patterson, best sellers book and only Hollywood does only best sellers, low budget movies tend not to have a book, or if they do it is not going to be a best seller. The movie is a hybrid genre to attract a larger audience and the area they filmed in was a high status location to connote a large amount of money they had for this movie, also in the school car park you can see the type of cars in there, they are all high classed expensive cars.
The dominant ideology value of Americans being wealthy shown by the cars. The devices Hollywood use are high-tech shown by their own music made for the movie, the special affects used in the movie, for example, Jacob; from being a human to a ware wolf. The scenery is all glamorised and they are able to hire equipment such as green screens.
London to Brighton
Media forms- How does the trailer use media language to establish the film's genre?
London to Brighton is a hybrid, thriller and drama. During the movie there are reviews shown for example, Times wrote ‘compelling drama', these genres are presented by the tempo of the music, they use fast tempo music to connote thriller. Also, you can hear gun shots at the end to connote thriller as well. The film review wrote ‘brutally raw thriller’ which builds up makes the audience want to watch the movie because of the reviews, it makes them watch it to actually know what the excitement of the movie is about.
They use fast editing to connote thriller and excitement that the movie will bring. At the beginning they use slow editing to connote with the girls life style and how everything in her life is not going anywhere, stationary. Quick cuts and burred effects connote excitement and confusion, which also related to the genre, thrillers.
Close-ups are used to connote drama, close-ups connotes facial expressions and allows the audience to connect with the actor. The areas in the movie that are seen as a close-up are: when she is in the car and when she is in the public toilets. Medium long shots show the setting and the main story line in that particular scene, which for example, there is a scene when the girl and the man are walking into the hotel room, the relationship connotes the genre as well drama, by showing the medium long shot is showing the back of the characters, so this connotes what the characters are looking at and allows us to build up an image of what will happen next. They also see the gaps between the man and the two women, the two women are not walking next to each other to show the relationship between them two is not as strong as the audience would expect it.
The sounds in the trailer are parallel though out, at the beginning you feel the innocence’s of all the characters, the music misleads the audience because some of the characters are not as innocent as the protagonist. They force her into becoming a prostitute and wear red lipstick which disturbs the audience because a twelve year old is wearing someone a grown women should wear.
Media Representation: How is gender represented in the trailer?
This trailer stereotypes the subordinate group, women, as sex objects and desperate, weak and innocent. They are also seen as powerless, as on the train the girl and women are running away, and when the girl is walking in and out the room with the man and he holds tight to the girls arm and leads her out the room, to connote who has the power and who is in charge. The powerless view on the women shows vulnerability as they trap themselves in the toilet to escape the men. In the movie, the ladies are prostitutes which connote the women are lacking in moral values and they have low class status because they are selling themselves for money.
However, the dominate group, men, as powerful as the males are physically and mentally leading the women, as they order the girl in the car and have money to spend for these women. .
Media institutions: In what ways is the film London to Brighton typical of a low budget films?
The reason why London to Brighton is a typical low budget film is because the area they have shot the entire movie is local and the actors that are presented are unknown. They have used natural locations, no man made scenes which connotes they have not a lot of money to make their own screens. The costumes are ordinary, for example the girl is wearing jeans a pullover and a casual top, which has no high class label on and the clothing can be brought in local shops. The reviews throughout the trailer are from local newspapers and not very high class newspapers.
Another reason why this is a typical British film is because of the accents and the story line is realistic whereas Hollywood is not usually as realistic they have ‘plastic girls’ and the stereotypical look to a man’s body, they also have a wider audience. London to Brighton is not screened in the best cinemas around the world.
Media Audience: In what ways does the trailer promote the film to its targeted audience?
This trailer connotes the target audience to be aged 16-24, classes C2D, the reasons why the audience may be these is because of the type of actors and they age of the protagonists. Another reason why it promotes to the younger audience is because the storyline that is presented would appeal more to the younger audience as it happens in everyday life and around certain areas of the UK especially, Central London.

Film Langauge Essay - Mr Bush (:
27 Dresses
27 Dresses genre is comedy and romance. Throughout the scene you are presented with diegetic sounds which consist of the protagonist talking and the music played in the back ground. The scene is romantic as she is confessing to a male about how much her love has grown for him and near the end of the confession the music starts to plays, which is parallel to the scene. The reason why it was parallel sound is because that particular scene the producers and director wants the audience to feel as if they are on that boat, witnessing true love, so they attract the audience with the music. If they used contrapuntal sounds they would have lost the audiences interest and not take the scene as serious as it was.
The editing used in this scene is jump and fade because it is like you blink and the scene has changed, this could create mystery and suspense because you are not able to see the other characters expressions, this enables the audience to stay in focus with what is happening, as you’re not shown every moment of each character. Also, as she continues her confession, the male’s expressions are not giving any sign of connection with the feelings she is giving out, which makes the audience wonder what will happen next, allowing them to continue watching.
The lighting used in this scene is high key because as the male is walking through the crowd you see shadows of the other people on him but his shadow shown quite realistic, they used this to show his facial expressions and they want him to stand out from the crowd for the audience to draw all their attention to him and no one else, with the key light. The rest of the lighting comes from the decorations and candles, giving a more realistic look to the scene.
The camera angles used are medium long shot to focus on the character more than the setting. When the male is moving through the crowd, they use panning, this connotes the audience to follow the male like they would if they were in the scene, and there is no stress to the audience’s eye and a zoom. They do an over shoulder view from the males shoulder to connote what both male and female view. This allows the audience to see from the characters point of view. They continuously repeat this view; could be using a shot reverse shot from over the shoulder because the audience are able to see what they are seeing and also able to identify with the character, empathising with them. Throughout the scene there is a high angle from the male looking up to the women on the stage, to connote who is in control of the feelings. Besides that, the rest of the scenes are medium long shot.
The clothing the protagonist is wearing is a black dress, this questions the audience because black is meant to connote evilness and dark, however the protagonist is neither evil nor dark, but she is seemed to be mysterious and tries to hide away from her feelings. This connotes her innocence and how she shy’s her character away from the world. Her body language towards the male is as if she wants to 'live life on the edge' but her innocence and she being shy is stopping her from being open. This allows the majority of the audience to relate to her because people in love do not tend to be open, they tend to be shy. Therefore people can relate to them.
The male is wearing a grey top, with a navy shirt and a black blazer; this colour connotes a similar feel to back but the colour connotes protectiveness and very open hearted compared to the colour black. However, the male looks quite scruffy because of the way his hair is laid. Men tend to be more open, allowing the male audience to relate to him.
The make-up and the hair are very simple, because it is a Hollywood movie, the make the make-up and hairstyles more realistic as romance happens in everyday life, so it is hard to exaggerate with make-up, plus this will confuse the main audience and lose their primary audience.
Cinematography -Mr Bush (:
Its a Wonderful Life (1946)
Its a Wonderful Life's genre is a drama, fantasy and romance. The movie is about an angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed.
The cinematography used in the particular scene are: firstly, at the beginning you see a medium-long shot of a little girl in bed, she calls in the protagonist, her father, with a long shot and as he walks they us panning. By using a long shot, the audience are able to see the type of character he is by the way he is dressed. He is dressed smartly with a suit and a tie, however his posture is not straight and he slouching connoting his character is not really interested and does not care about what is doing or how he looks because, maybe, his job takes a lot of energy out of him or just does not appreciate his life.
Secondly, there is a close up to the petals that fell on the little girls bed, which could connote those petals are foreshadowing something that will come up later on in the movie. They continue to use panning and focus on the protagonist, by using panning it allows the audience to follow the moving image smoothly with their eye. There is another close up of the protagonist putting the petals in his pocket pretending he had stuck the petals back on to the flower.
Finally, another close up is shown of the two characters in that seen to allow us to see facial expressions and only focus on them instead of the mise-en-scene.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999) (stop at one minute)
Eyes Wide Shuts genre is drama, mystery and thriller. the movie is about a New York City doctor, who is married to an art curator, pushes himself on a harrowing and dangerous night-long adventures of sexual and moral discovery after his wife admits that she once almost cheated on him.
The cinematography used in the particular scene are: firstly, they use a medium-long shot and panning to show the settings and the clothing the man is wearing and then there is a sudden jump to a close up with a man in a gold musk and white face, it is a close up allowing the audience to concentrate on the facial expressions on that man, which is just a straight face connoting seriousness and intensity.
Secondly, there is tracking shot of a group of people doing some ritual and then a zoom to two people on the top balcony and they turn and face the camera, connoting something is going to occur due to these men./women. there is a shot reverse shot used and you are looking up at the men, low angle shot, connoting the importance of the men/women in that particular room. Then there is a long shot to show the whole room and what exaclty is going on, showing the audience different angles of the room and ritual connoting what everyone is looking at. they go to a scene of a taxi driving, which could show someone important is in that taxi and is the main protagonist or hero to stop something bad to happen.
Finally, there is a zoom out of a women and man eating grapes (or some sort of fruit), and then a zoom of becoming intimate, as it zooms in the audience is able to see the type of expression on the ladies face and she does not look too comfortable, which could connote she could be leading him on for the ritual to take place or she feels guilty about almost cheating on her husband.
The key difference in these two movies are: most of the angles shot in Its a Wonderful Life if they use natural movements like panning, but for Eyes Wide Shut they use tracking shots.
Four Still Images:
The Ring
In the image of 'The Ring', the type of angle the shot is a medium long shot. The reason for this is because you are able to see the setting and also you are able to see the facial expressions on the lady, which persuades the audience to see further in too. If you have not seen this movie and you see this image you are persuaded by the facial expressions to see how and why she is screaming and frightened.
The Last Exorcism:
The image above shows a long shot of the girl and man looking as if he is going to perform a ritual or some sort of prayer on the girl for her to release the demon from her. This picture is effective due to the type on angle it shot in because you are able to see the what exactly is going on and the mise-en-scene which is every appealing and allows the audience to get their own view on what exactly is happening, instead of being told from a picture whats happening, they are able to have their own view, as your are unable to make out the facial expressions.
Mary Poppins:
The type of shot taken in the picture about is a medium shot, this is effected because you can see the facial expressions and the mise-en-scene allowing the audience to be empathetic to the characters.
Harry Potter:
In this still image of Harry Potter you can see a high angle shot, medium shot to see the environment they are in, their facial expressions but you are unable to understand what they are looking at. Judging from watching some harry potter films, it has some relevance to an adventure they are going to go on. This is effective because the audience are able to understand what is going on but are also able to make some assumptions on what they may be looking for.

Extension Task - Mr Bush (:
The history of Hollywood’s technological development is one of opportunism driven by economic motives. Many critical accounts, however, suggest that the inventions of cinemas, and its following technological development, responded to a pre-existing aesthetic.
In the late 1920s, the sound in cinema of picture palaces incorporated all the major features of cinema technology, it was essentially creating 19th century inventions; mechanical sound recording, an efficient film transport mechanism, the electric light. Although, a few cinemas pay much attention to the development of sound technology, the cinematic equipment is a machine of the audible as well as the visible, and more fundamental changes have taken place in the technology of electrical sound recording and transmission than in the optics and chemistry of image processing.
There are two main sounds, Parallel and contrapuntal sounds. Parallel sounds are when the music is expected with a scene, for example soft romantic music playing over a love story. Whereas, contrapuntal sounds are when the music is not expected with a scene, for example, classical music playing over a fight scene.
For contrapuntal sounds, it allows the audience to see a different light what is actually going on in the scene, following on with my example for contrapuntal, in a fight with classical music playing over it would allow the audience to relate to the emotions in the scene instead of getting the adrenaline of the up-tempo music with a fight scene, which is parallel sounds.
On extra paper, I have done a collage of contrapuntal and parallel pictures with certain songs. For parallel sound, I used images for death and war; the music accompanied was ‘Phil Collins-Against All Odds’, this is parallel sounds because the music relates to the type of pictures presented.
On the other hand, for contrapuntal sounds I used romantic pictures with a song called ‘Requiem For a Dream by Clint Mansell’, this shows an intense orchestra instrumental with romantic pictures to show the contrast and how certain photos express different emotions.

Film Ms wigley (:
Film process
- Someone has an idea for a movie.
- They create an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea.
- A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film.
- People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew).
- The film is completed and sent to the studio.
- The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
- The distribution company determines how many copies (prints) of the film to make.
- The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buyers representing the theaters.
- The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
- The prints are sent to the theaters a few days before the opening day.
- The theater shows the movie for a specified number of weeks (engagement).
- You buy a ticket and watch the movie.
- At the end of the engagement, the theater sends the print back to the distribution company and makes payment on the lease agreement.
During this period,1920s to 1950s, Hollywood film production was dominated by the studio system, which saw an ownership develop in which a handful of major studios competed with one another by signing and developing stars and using films as 'vehicles' in which to serve these stars up to the public. While some critics have argued that this resulted in highly processed, highly manufactured and highly repetitive films, it is an undeniable fact that some of the greatest Hollywood films of all time were created during this period. 'Gone with the Wind', 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Casablanca' are just three of the classics released through the studio system, and it is also clear that the decline of the studio system in the 1950's and 1960's coincided with the end of Hollywood's dominance of the American film industry.
Horizontal integration means the merger of firms at the same stage of production in the same or different industries. For example, AOL and Time Warner.
Vertical integration means the merger of firms at different stages of production and distribution in the same industry. For example, Sony and Ericsson
