27 Dresses
27 Dresses genre is comedy and romance. Throughout the scene you are presented with diegetic sounds which consist of the protagonist talking and the music played in the back ground. The scene is romantic as she is confessing to a male about how much her love has grown for him and near the end of the confession the music starts to plays, which is parallel to the scene. The reason why it was parallel sound is because that particular scene the producers and director wants the audience to feel as if they are on that boat, witnessing true love, so they attract the audience with the music. If they used contrapuntal sounds they would have lost the audiences interest and not take the scene as serious as it was.
The editing used in this scene is jump and fade because it is like you blink and the scene has changed, this could create mystery and suspense because you are not able to see the other characters expressions, this enables the audience to stay in focus with what is happening, as you’re not shown every moment of each character. Also, as she continues her confession, the male’s expressions are not giving any sign of connection with the feelings she is giving out, which makes the audience wonder what will happen next, allowing them to continue watching.
The lighting used in this scene is high key because as the male is walking through the crowd you see shadows of the other people on him but his shadow shown quite realistic, they used this to show his facial expressions and they want him to stand out from the crowd for the audience to draw all their attention to him and no one else, with the key light. The rest of the lighting comes from the decorations and candles, giving a more realistic look to the scene.
The camera angles used are medium long shot to focus on the character more than the setting. When the male is moving through the crowd, they use panning, this connotes the audience to follow the male like they would if they were in the scene, and there is no stress to the audience’s eye and a zoom. They do an over shoulder view from the males shoulder to connote what both male and female view. This allows the audience to see from the characters point of view. They continuously repeat this view; could be using a shot reverse shot from over the shoulder because the audience are able to see what they are seeing and also able to identify with the character, empathising with them. Throughout the scene there is a high angle from the male looking up to the women on the stage, to connote who is in control of the feelings. Besides that, the rest of the scenes are medium long shot.
The clothing the protagonist is wearing is a black dress, this questions the audience because black is meant to connote evilness and dark, however the protagonist is neither evil nor dark, but she is seemed to be mysterious and tries to hide away from her feelings. This connotes her innocence and how she shy’s her character away from the world. Her body language towards the male is as if she wants to 'live life on the edge' but her innocence and she being shy is stopping her from being open. This allows the majority of the audience to relate to her because people in love do not tend to be open, they tend to be shy. Therefore people can relate to them.
The male is wearing a grey top, with a navy shirt and a black blazer; this colour connotes a similar feel to back but the colour connotes protectiveness and very open hearted compared to the colour black. However, the male looks quite scruffy because of the way his hair is laid. Men tend to be more open, allowing the male audience to relate to him.
The make-up and the hair are very simple, because it is a Hollywood movie, the make the make-up and hairstyles more realistic as romance happens in everyday life, so it is hard to exaggerate with make-up, plus this will confuse the main audience and lose their primary audience.
